Coaching Philosophies

I know there are a couple of us that are/will be coaches on here and I was just wondering what is your coaching philosophy? Do you coach like Kevin Saunders (no disrespect..just a tough-headed coach) or do you emphasize more of a "have fun" aspect but push them to win...this could bring up different issues so I was just curious to see what different people thought about coaching...It is very tough these days to be a coach imo

i think it all depends on who ur assistants are...i mean every coach on your staff cant have the same personality because everybody on the team has different ones...kinda like a good cop bad cop scenario.

i.e. my dad coached with coach shupe for 20 some years. and i really think he had alot to do with kellys sucess. shupe was a nitty gritty coach, while my dad was more of a players coach. however both emphasied the same things.
1. hardwork
2. dedication
3. love for the game
4. fundamentals
5. WINNING
both were GREAT motivators. i remember shupe tellin me my freshman year by the time i was a senior if i was lucky i might some atbats,

but to answer your question don't be fake. dont try to be somethin your not, because the kids will see right through it and lose respect. Imo if i was coaching highschool, i would try to teach the basics and have a team who is fundamentally sound in every aspect. (a la Wyrick, noone has done as much with as less as this man. im not puttin down kellys players im jus sayin he is a grrrrreeat coach) some kids respond to cussing and yelling, others dont. as a coach you have to find out what it takes to get through to these youngmen and do it.

to me.....it all depends on my players......if they just goof off a bunch then i would have to straighten them out......if they were pretty disciplined SP i would just let'em do what they do best.

Good post Moonlight, and Ill have to say I couldnt agree more...the only thing I would add to that is I dont think you can be successful if you are a prick 24/7 I think at some point you have to let the players know you care for them and the reason you are hard on the is because you expect a lot out of them...not just because you like to be mean...

And BTW I think your dad had a lot to do with Shupes success...
